Georgetown’s Summer High School Science and Medical Programs explore the fascinating world of modern medicine through hands-on instruction from Georgetown’s Medical Center. These immersive experiences combine engaging lectures with hands-on activities that introduce you to the rigors of the medical school curriculum. Whether you’re interested in pursuing a career as a medical professional or discovering the world of criminalistics, Georgetown has a program that will enable you to get a head start on exploring your interests and discovering your passions.
Georgetown’s 1-Week Medical Academy provides an unparalleled introduction to the medical field, giving you a head start on the path toward medical school. You will explore topics ranging from human anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and infectious diseases, to surgery, cancer, and biomedical ethics—all while learning from expert faculty and applying your knowledge to patient simulations, discussion groups, and research projects. By the end of this program, you will think like a medical student via facilitated case studies and mystery diagnosis scenarios.
The Nursing Academy offers an introduction to the nursing field, where you’ll have the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of the profession along with a variety of career paths and specializations. Throughout the program, you’ll engage in faculty-led instruction and hands-on clinical experiences using a lifelike patient simulator at Georgetown’s O’Neill Family Foundation Clinical Simulation Center.
Students with a scientific background will conduct experiments to illuminate the role that biotechnology plays in the fields of health and science. They will clone a gene and analyze the resulting product, examine the role of DNA and protein diagnostics in modern healthcare, discover how DNA is used in forensics, and explore other applications of Biotechnology. This program also includes applications of Biotechnology in current industries including Medicine and Health, Forensics, Agriculture and Food Science, and Basic Scientific Research.
In Georgetown’s Forensic Science Academy, you will gain a firsthand look at the world of forensic science from some of the field’s top professionals. Learn directly from investigators, detectives, crime scene technicians, and pathologists, and gain invaluable insight into potential career opportunities in this ever-evolving field. Put your critical thinking skills to the ultimate test as you identify and interpret evidence and explore the application of science and medicine in law enforcement.
Georgetown’s Medical Immersion Academy enables you to dive deep into several topics. You will investigate contemporary medical challenges facing society; discuss the latest advances affecting the applied science of medicine; learn various clinical skills, and observe cadaver dissection. Taught by world-class experts, this program prepares you to pursue a rigorous career in medicine.
The Neuroscience Academy exposes students to the fundamentals of neurobiology, incorporating a clinical focus from which to explore how the nervous system functions. Patient cases will be used to guide learning of CNS function; introduce you to medical treatments, medication, and brain imaging; and enhance your awareness of careers in the medical profession and undergraduate majors to get you there.
