At Georgetown University, she serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Women & Gender Studies Program, where she developed and leads the "Women & Health in the Americas" course. She is deeply committed to women's health, particularly in the areas of sexual and reproductive rights, and incorporates Mindfulness-Based Interventions into her research to address stress and anxiety.

Researching epigenetic inheritance at Georgetown University's Oncology Department was a transformative experience. She contributed her expertise in placenta biology to the de Assis Lab, highlighting the placenta's crucial role in epigenetic inheritance. This collaborative effort has established a foundation for a significant partnership between UFMG and Georgetown University, promising to elevate their respective research programs.

In Brazil, Dr. Paiva is an attending physician and professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) School of Medicine and University Hospital. She dedicated ten years to leading the Gender and Sexual Violence Service at UFMG University Hospital, providing essential care to survivors of sexual assault. Her advocacy for safe abortion is evident in her involvement with the Brazilian National Committee of Sexual Violence and Medical Legal Abortion of FEBRASGO (Brazilian Federation of Obstetric and Gynecologists) and her role as a Consultant in Women's Health at the Pan American Health Organization.
