Designed for students new to computer programming, coding, and digital design, the Basic Coding & Data Science Institute introduces you to the world of data, digital literacy, and computational thinking. You’ll investigate how data and the innovation, disruption, and creation of new technologies impact our world while gaining firsthand experience with big data, advanced technology, and web design. Over the course of the week, you’ll have opportunities to engage with guest speakers from the field, visit a D.C. tech firm, and explore the concepts of data-driven computer technology.

Program Format & Subject Areas

As a student in the Basic Coding & Data Science Institute, you'll spend your day immersed in a blend of classroom lectures, field trips, hands-on activities, and group discussions. Throughout the course of the week, you'll have the opportunity to explore the following subject areas:

  • Coding Principles, including website design, HTML, and CSS
  • Libraries and frameworks, including ZingChart and Javascript
  • Data presentation
  • Advanced technology, including big data analytics, data visualization, and storytelling methodologies
